Equipment Recommendations for Tactical Shotgun Course - 5/12/12

To assist you in gearing up for your Tactical Shotgun Course, we have created this page as a guide.  While we have solutions available for you to purchase, you are welcome to use what you would like but please keep these considerations in mind:

First, remember that when you carry a tactical shotgun, you need to carry several different kinds of ammunition for the various applications.  A good rule of thumb for this class is to be able to carry a minimum of 25 rounds of bird shot and 5 rounds of slug and 5 rounds of 00 buck (all in separate places on your body or weapon).

The objective is to have three different places of carry and to get your “system” down to access each type of round quickly and easily while still maintaining a tactical posture.  Because of this, it is NOT a good idea to use pockets as a method of carry.  Also, we do not recommend weapon sling bandoleers as they are very difficult to tactically load from.

There are some shotgun ammo pouches in the civilian world that will work (mostly belt mounted) and some that are simply not tactical.  The critical criteria is whether 1) the shells are kept securely, 2) can be accessed quickly, and 3) will not fall out when running.  If you have something that meets these requirements, feel free to bring it and give it a try.

There are basically three places that you can carry ammunition:  On the belt, on/in a vest, or on the gun (side saddle or stock holder).  Each place should have a separate type of ammo.  For example, a good “system” would be a large pouch on the belt to carry the bird shot (non-shooting side for fast reload), a small pouch on the belt or chest to carry 5 rounds of 00 buck, and a pouch on the stock to carry 5 rounds of slug.  We will help configure your gear at the class and help you get a good, tactical system down.

There are many different pouches out there (both “civilian” and tactical) and you are welcome to use whatever you choose.  If you would like, below are the items we will have at the class for purchase to help you build your “system”.  Each of these items have been discounted for you at a special student price.

S.T.R.I.K.E. SAW POUCH (Coyote Tan with MOLLE or Black with Speed Clips) - $46.99

Even though this pouch was designed for the SAW, this is probably THE BEST tactical shotgun shell pouch that is available today.  It's large enough to fit an entire box of shells and has an elastic keeper on the top (under the velcro flap) to keep the shells from bouncing out when you run.  The keeper is removable and the pouch can be used for many other applications (med kit, NVG's, general utility, etc.) when you are not carrying a shotgun.  You can also use it when you go bird hunting or shooting clays.

Don't forget the sling!  Think of a sling as you would a holster for your pistol.  While we will not be doing any transitions from shotgun (primary) to pistol (secondary) in this class, you do need a tactical sling for your shotgun.
